In Kuwait’s extreme heat, water-cooled chillers typically perform better. They are able to perform efficiently while operating in extreme ambient temperatures, whereas air-cooled chillers can underperform when the temperature exceeds about 45°C. Many facilities also utilise water-cooled systems and water treatment solutions when applicable.
Due to the extremely hot climate and dust conditions and at a minimum, industrial chillers need to have professional maintenance completed at least once every quarter. On a monthly basis, service personnel will go to the site to perform simple tasks like cleaning filters, and performing visual inspections on a weekly basis is ideal. Planned and routine maintenance, as discussed, is essential to keeping the equipment operating at efficient levels and ensuring your equipment reaches the end of its intended service life in the harsh desert environment.
Kuwait has taken on the regulations of the GCC Standardisation Organisation (GSO) and also separately requires MEW energy efficiency ratings to be used. Chillers in the industrial market would need to meet minimum Coefficient of Performance (COP) levels. Many of the facilities that use chiller systems are now seeking LEED certification or similar, which would require chillers to have higher efficiency ratings than standard regulatory requirements.
