West Bengal is entering a new phase of industrial growth. New industrial investments, manufacturing expansions and projects in renewable energy, engineering, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and emerging technologies are creating new opportunities across the state.
A recent drive to allot land for industrial projects has brought some of the proposed projects closer to implementation. Reports stated that land has been allotted to 33 industrial units for projects representing proposed investments of about ₹60,000 crore with the potential to generate about 62,000 jobs.
The projects are spread across various sectors and industrial locations of West Bengal. Industrial parks are being developed in West Bengal under the venture of WBIIDC.
Such expansion represents a huge opportunity for the industrial cooling industry. Reliable temperature control will be vital to the expanding industrial landscape.
Kharagpur’s Industrial Expansion Creates Diverse Cooling Requirements
Vidyasagar Industrial Park in Kharagpur is among the key locations in this industrial expansion. The announced projects cover power cables, construction chemicals, steel wire, solar cells, agrochemicals, food supplements, packaging, jute products and paper conversion.
Companies associated with these developments include Laser Power & Infra, Pidilite Industries, UIC Udyog, Abdos Oils, Sova Solar, Maha Feeds Agrotech and K.R. Lifesciences. The list also includes Mahanadi Steel & Iron, MPM, Paracoat Products, Lemontech Agro Products, KIG Kraft Tech Containers, Kamakshi Jute Industries and Poddar Global.
Each sector has different temperature-control requirements. Cooling is needed for chemical manufacturing processes that generate heat. Stable process conditions are necessary in the production of agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals for the quality of the product. Packaging and paper-conversion machinery also benefits from good heat management.
Manufacturing processes can be cooled down by industrial chillers. Hydraulic and lubricating oil can be cooled down by oil chillers. The right solution depends on the machinery, the heat load, the operating conditions and the desired temperature range.
Solar Manufacturing and Engineering Projects at Falta
Falta Industrial Growth Centre is another important location for West Bengal’s manufacturing ambitions. The announced projects include solar cell and module manufacturing, railway rolling-stock springs, hosiery fabrics and supporting business infrastructure.
Websol Energy System has secured land for a proposed solar manufacturing facility with planned annual capacities of 4 GW for solar cells and 4 GW for modules, to be developed in phases. Vikram Solar is also associated with a planned 3.2 GW solar-module manufacturing facility.
These projects illustrate the importance of stable temperature control for advanced manufacturing. Producing solar cells is a temperature-sensitive process. Manufacturing equipment may need controlled cooling to maintain the same operating conditions.
Air-cooled scroll chillers and water-cooled chillers are suitable for process applications. Panel ACs can protect electrical enclosures and automation systems from excessive heat. These advanced cooling units prevent control failures and unplanned interruptions.
Oil cooling is a must for hydraulic presses and other machinery in engineering facilities. The cooling system must match the equipment’s heat output, operating cycle and site conditions.
Haringhata’s Technology and Manufacturing Projects
Haringhata Industrial Park is expected to support several emerging and established industries. The announced projects include Indnix Technology’s integrated semiconductor manufacturing facility, Gkon Electric Motor Vehicles’ electric vehicle unit, Teknoconstant Energy’s diesel generator manufacturing facility, Onamoy Healthcare’s pharmaceutical formulations unit and Sri Ganesh & Co.’s garment printing and embroidery operations.
The semiconductor fabrication process has very stringent requirements for temperature stability and environmental control. Pharmaceutical production units need suitable conditions for processes and storage areas.
These applications call for more than general-purpose air conditioning. Process chillers, industrial ACs and panel ACs serve different functions and must be selected according to the specific application.
Other announced projects add to the range of potential cooling requirements across the state. They include IMECO’s engineering and industrial equipment activities, Calprin Ads’ printed packaging facility in Murshidabad, and projects linked to the gems and jewellery sector in Howrah.
Defence, Power and Other Industrial Investments
Raghunathpur is also part of West Bengal’s industrial development plans. The announced projects include a 50 MW ground-mounted solar PV plant by WBSEDCL and Jupiter Defence’s proposed integrated defence manufacturing and ammunition facility across 256 acres.
Defence manufacturing and precision engineering can require thermal management for machining equipment, hydraulic systems and electrical controls. Solar power installations may need cooling for specific electrical and auxiliary equipment, depending on their design.
All of them are in various stages of development. Land allocation is an important step but does not mean that all the facilities are already under construction or ready for production. Real demand for industrial cooling will increase as projects move through the process of approval, construction, equipment installation and commissioning.
Why is Industrial Cooling Needed for New Manufacturing Units?
Industrial cooling enables manufacturers to maintain process temperatures and equipment functionality. Improper temperature control stresses sensitive equipment. Stressed equipment results in frequent downtime and added expenses.
An industrial application determines what type of cooling is required. Chemical and pharmaceutical plants need accurate process cooling. Hydraulic and lubricating systems in plants working with metal need oil chillers. Solar and electronics manufacturers install panel ACs to protect sensitive equipment.
The industrial cooling industry must meet application-specific reliable solutions for operational success. Standard solutions are not always the right fit for every facility. Operating temperatures, ambient conditions and production loads decide the right choices.
